Cutter, I'm in the trailer capitol of the world here, I think. I see new trailers like you're describing (though not rewelded after manufacture) around here for only a couple hundred dollars more. For less than fifty dollars more than that you can get one with a hydraulic tilt bed. All of these would come with trailer brakes, DOT lighting & reflectors and a break-away box. I thought you could use this info to compare when you're shopping. I hope this helps.

For what it's worth, I've personally always been a fan of the various building trade inspectors. I've done a fair amount of work in the various trades myself over the years on my homes and rental properties I've had.

I even recall an inspector examining a new meter box installation and pointing out one small piece of wire that was the wrong gauge. He asked if I had the right wire there and, when I told him I didn't even have a screwdriver with me this inspector went to his trunk, got a screwdriver and small piece of the right wire and put it in for me except for the last quarter turn. He handed me the screwdriver and told me to to that because he wasn't "allowed to do this." He saved me another trip there and a $25 (back then) 're-inspection fee.'

For my money, those guys are a tremendous asset. Personally, I like the idea of having my work checked out by a professional before I close it up.

The math for figuring hauling/towing capacities is pretty simple, really. Look at the GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) for your truck and subtract from that the total weight of the truck with all fluids, fuel and occupants. The difference is the total amount you can haul/tow.

A 3500 model might carry a GVWR of 10,000 lbs. The truck with fluids, fuel and occupants might weigh 4,800 lbs. Your hauling towing capacity is then 5,200 lbs. Assuming you load properly (either truck or trailer or both) that's the rated number. You can haul 5,200 and tow nothing, tow 5,200 and haul nothing or any combination thereof. I hope this helps.

For the sake of simplicity, would you think it a good idea to consolidate all three Ford truck categories (F-150, F-250 & F-350) into one "Ford" listing? I wondered the same about the Toyota listings. Otherwise we'll have two or three listings for each manufacturer. Thanks for listening.

Mark, that new hood was the cheapest and best solution for each of you. The benefits to you are obvious. For Deere, they make a customer happy and avoid all sorts of potential problems in attempting a fix like surface preparation, paint match, etc. Additionally, I'm sure they considered that if there's one dime-sized spot in nine months the root of the problem could well have been poor surface preparation prior to application of the original paint. They may well take your old hood in and analyze the origin of the problem to prevent it in the future. In any event, I'm glad they handled it the way they did and made you a happy customer.

Mark, I can relate to your Subaru story. I have a full dress Honda Goldwing touring bike and have been told I'm the only person anyone's ever seen "make a Goldwing look small." I would imagine if I took off the loader and backhoe and went with a belly mower I'd make my 4200 look more like a 420 at a distance. Oh, well... ;o)

I bought an old stable with piles just outside the doors that look to have been there a couple seasons. I have a small 26 HP Deere with a loader bucket (that I wouldn't let go of short of being at gunpoint). I have no other equipment to use, though. Any ideas how to handle this mess with what I have?

Ron, I'm going to pass on what my local Kubota dealer (who is a friend from high school) told me when I asked essentially the same questions. I had just started looking for a tractor anticipating about the same use as you. He told me if I bought a good, solid runner now the hours on it really wouldn't matter because I wouldn't put enough hours on it before I died to wear it out. While at one level that was a bit depressing to hear, he'd made his point. You and I aren't going to wear anything out with a little mowing and some loader work. If it's a good one when you get it, odds are it'll be a good one when your estate sells it. ;o)

Brian, I'm glad the link helped. When someone actually buys and pays for your 4200, give them a bill of sale. As to your loan payoff, simply call JD Credit and request a payoff figure. Make sure you get the name of the person who gives it to you and a 'good through' date. They have to receive it by that date for the figure to be honored. When you get paid send the payoff amount to Deere Credit and they'll send you whatever paperwork is appropriate. For what it's worth, my Deere dealer told me tractors don't have titles the way cars and trucks do. If there is something like a title Deere Credit sends you then you can reassign it to your buyer and send it to him when you get it. I hope this helps.

Thanks for your responses. I think I'm going to have to stay with mounting the hooks on the outside (top) if for no other reason than this particular bucket has a radius turn on the top down (to the inside) which precludes mounting on the inside. With the arc or radius downward at the top of the bucket, I see no other way to go. The good news is that it'll avoid contact with any sharp edge. I still want the full width reinforcement, but might go with shorter welds and caulking to weather seal it if any of the engineers here think I should be concerned with longer welds. While I want hooks near either end I'd never use just one near one end. My thought was by having one near either end I could use both ends together when I need a wider 'base' for lifting things like a fuel tank or big toolbox into the bed of the truck. I hope that makes sense the way I explained it. Is my thinking logical on this?

I want to put some hooks on the top of my 420 loader bucket on my John Deere 4200 MFWD so I can secure a rope, strap or chain if I need to. The metal there doesn't look the heaviest so I'm planning on bending some plate steel to match the radius of the bucket there and weld to the inside before I attach the hooks. My plan is to weld a solid bead all the way around the four sides of the new reinforcing plate so as to avoid any gaps being homes for dirt and moisture which could lead to premature rusting. Am I thinking of this right here? Then I'd either weld or bolt big loop hooks on either end and in the middle with a couple of clevis chain hooks midway between the ends and the middle hook. I figure that way anything I'd want to do I could from about any position. Any thoughts on doing this or another way to go about it now before I get started?

I'm always a fan of getting something ready to go before I try to sell it. I know you deal in these so why not put the new grille and headlight assembly on and just add that to your $7500 price? Then no one has something to pick at when they're looking at it. Just one guy's thoughts here. Good luck with it.

For what it's worth to anyone who looks at this in the archives, I was able to find a JD Owner's manual and JD Service manual on Ebay for about half the price of new. Deere sells the owner's manual for about $15 but the service manual was around $75. With shipping from Deere the pair was approaching $100. I got the pair here used for under $50. There's no guarantee what you want will be there but it was worth the time to look for me, anyhow.

I'd be happy to just get the part free. Without a trailer, it's about more effort to get my tractor there for 'free' work as it's worth. ;o)

Cutter, I'm assuming you're talking about the spray foam insulation. I know the cost on that is outrageous as I looked into having my 80 x70 barn done. Fortunately, I found that a guy who owes me money works for a company that does that so I'm getting the labor "free" in one sense now. The dead cost of the material itself is still going to run me into the thousands but I'm going far thicker than just an inch, too. ;o)

One thing he did tell me was that the hotter it is when you do this, the better the insulation will be. Apparently the stuff expands far better the hotter the ambient air temperature is. My plan then, for what it's worth, is to suffer through the rest of this season and buy my materials at the end of season pricing then have it done in August when the temps are in the nineties. He told me the same amount of material can go twice as far (or, obviously, twice as thick) at 90 degrees versus 50 degrees.
